Finally, Star Trek fans, the countdown begins.

Star Trek: Discovery will take off Sept. 24, the first Sunday of the traditional TV season, with a premiere on CBS at 8:30 ET/PT. That night, immediately afterward, Episode 2 will be available on CBS All Access.

After that, new episodes will be available only on CBS All Access for subscribers of the streaming service, which costs $5.99 a month. Season 1 will consist of two chapters: Eight episodes will be released weekly on Sundays through Nov. 5; remaining installments in the 15-episode season are due to begin streaming in January.

More than 50 years after the original Star Trek series premiered, Star Trek: Discovery has been highly anticipated by fans of the pop culture phenomenon. The new series has been delayed twice. First promised for February and then summer, the series was  postponed due to production challenges, including the departure of executive producer Bryan Fuller (American Gods).

Set about 10 years before Captain Kirk's mission started in the original series, >Discovery will follow Starfleet voyages as they set out to find new worlds and other lifeforms. Sonequa Martin-Green (The Walking Dead), plays First Officer Michael Burnham, and Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), plays Capt. Philippa Georgiou.

CBS All Access' first original series, The Good Wife spinoff The Good Fight, premiered earlier this year and has been renewed for a second season.
